In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff. This special unit, the Commander in Chief's Guard, was formed on March 12, 1776 with Captain Caleb Gibbs (formerly adjutant of the 14th Continental Regiment and appointed Aid to Major General Greene) as commander. Captain William Beatty, eldest son of Col. William Beatty of Frederick Co., Maryland, was born June 18, 1758. Early in 1776 he entered the army, and was appointed an Ensign in the Maryland Flying Camp. He served almost uninterruptedly throughout the war, having risen to the rank of Captain, until his death at the battle of Hobkirk's Hill, April 25, 1781. Capt. Beatty was never married.
